The Opportunity

A Government Department is seeking an experienced Health and Safety Officer to join their team in Cairns on a temporary basis. This role will support operational teams by providing high-quality, professional WHS advice and contributing to the development, implementation, and monitoring of workplace health and safety systems.

About the Role

Key accountabilities include:
• Providing professional WHS advice to operational staff, managers, and WHS committees
• Interpreting and applying WHS legislation, standards, and best-practice guidance
• Supporting the identification of hazards and implementation of effective risk controls
• Leading and supporting incident reporting and investigation processes
• Conducting workplace inspections and audits to validate the effectiveness of controls
• Contributing to the development and review of safety procedures, standards, and tools
• Supporting delivery of safety training, consultation activities, and continuous improvement initiatives
• Assisting with initiatives focused on injury prevention, safety leadership, and high-risk activity management
• Supporting Health and Safety Representatives through training, coaching, and engagement
• Maintaining awareness of contemporary and emerging WHS practices

About You

You are a capable and confident WHS professional who enjoys working closely with operational teams and leaders to improve safety outcomes.

You will bring:
• Qualification in Work Health and Safety (Degree or Diploma preferred)
• Demonstrated experience in operational or frontline WHS roles
• Strong knowledge of WHS legislation, standards, and risk management practices
• Proven experience in incident investigation and workplace inspections
• Ability to provide practical, professional safety advice
• Strong communication, reporting, and stakeholder engagement skills
• Experience in civil construction or high-risk environments highly regarded
• Exposure to psychosocial risk management desirable but not essential
